Instagram Updates Its Map Feature to Make It Easier to Tell If You’re Sharing Your Location

Instagram is rolling out an update to its Map feature that gives users more transparency — and control — over when and how their location is shared. The update makes it much easier to see whether your location is currently active, who can view it, and how to adjust sharing settings in real time.

A More Transparent Map

The new update aims to reduce confusion around Instagram’s location-sharing options. Many users weren’t sure whether their location was being tracked or visible to others — something Instagram now wants to fix.

Instead of burying settings deep in menus, the app now provides clear indicators showing when your location is being shared. You can access these options directly through Instagram’s DM (Direct Messages) section, where the in-app map lives.

More Control Over Who Sees You

With this update, Instagram has added flexible visibility settings. You can choose exactly who can see your location — whether it’s mutual followers, Close Friends, a custom list, or no one at all.

Location sharing remains off by default, and when turned on, it only updates when you open or return to the app. You can also temporarily disable sharing for specific places or individuals without turning off the feature entirely.

For teen users, Instagram adds an extra layer of protection: the app will send a notification to alert them whenever location sharing is first activated.

A Step Toward Better Privacy

This move follows Instagram’s recent push to make privacy and safety features more visible. Meta says the new map interface is designed to “help people understand when their location is active and in control of how it’s shared.”

In an era where social apps are under increasing scrutiny for handling user data, this is a step in the right direction — giving users not only more privacy, but also more clarity and confidence about how their information is used.
