Anthropic co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei is visiting India this week, with plans to establish a new office in Bengaluru and explore a strategic partnership with Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries, according to a report by Newspapers. The move highlights the AI company’s growing focus on India — its second-largest market after the United States.
Amodei is also expected to travel to Mumbai to meet Ambani and senior executives at Reliance Industries, India’s most valuable firm and the parent company of telecom giant Reliance Jio, sources told Newspapers. Discussions between the two companies have reportedly been underway for several months, centered around a potential collaboration to expand access to Anthropic’s Claude AI assistant in the Indian market.
With more than a billion internet users, India is the world’s second-largest online market after China, making it an increasingly crucial region for AI innovation. Several Indian AI startups already rely on Anthropic’s Claude models for powering their products, serving both domestic and international clients.
According to analytics platform Similarweb, India currently accounts for the second-highest share of traffic to Claude’s website — right after the United States — underscoring the country’s growing importance in Anthropic’s global expansion strategy.
In August, Reliance Industries announced new collaborations with several leading technology firms — including its existing investors Google and Meta — to develop AI infrastructure and enterprise-focused solutions under its newly established division, Reliance Intelligence. The Mumbai-based conglomerate’s initiative signals its growing ambition to become a major player in India’s rapidly expanding artificial intelligence ecosystem.
Reliance had also been exploring a potential partnership with OpenAI, which earlier this year launched its under-$5 ChatGPT subscription plan in India and revealed intentions to open a New Delhi office by late 2025.
The collaboration between Reliance and OpenAI was initially expected to be announced during OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s planned visit to India last month. However, Altman postponed his trip, delaying any formal partnership announcement.
Later this week, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is scheduled to be in Bengaluru to officially announce the opening of the company’s new India office on Thursday, sources told Newspapers. He will be joined by Guillaume Princen, Anthropic’s head of EMEA, and Daniel Delaney, the company’s startups chief.
During the visit, major venture capital firms such as Accel and Lightspeed are hosting exclusive sessions with Anthropic executives. These events aim to guide developers and startups on how to effectively integrate Claude AI into their products and services.
Meanwhile, Anthropic’s flagship Claude app continues to gain traction in the Indian market. Available on iOS and Android, the app saw a 48% year-over-year increase in downloads across India in September, reaching approximately 767,000 installs, according to analytics firm Appfigures.
Consumer spending on the Claude app in India also experienced explosive growth — rising 572% year-over-year, with in-app purchases totaling $195,000 in September alone, the data revealed.
The rapid adoption underscores India’s growing importance as one of Anthropic’s most active and profitable markets outside the United States.
