Gemini AI by Google May Be Getting a Big Makeover Soon

After the success of OpenAI’s video editing app Sora, which recently climbed to the top of the U.S. App Store charts, Google appears to be preparing a more visually rich update for its Gemini AI app. The company is reportedly testing a new interface that moves away from the traditional chatbot-style layout toward a scrollable, image-driven feed filled with suggested prompts. According to findings from Android Authority, the redesigned interface was discovered in a recent version of the Gemini Android app — though it’s not yet available to the public. A reverse engineer managed to activate the hidden home screen, revealing shortcut buttons like “Create Image” and “Deep Research” placed near the top, followed by a visually engaging feed of suggested activities and ideas. When asked for comment, a Google spokesperson declined to share details, saying only that there’s “no announcement to make just yet.” In the screenshots shown, Gemini’s new feed suggested creative photo prompts such as “Teleport me to deep space,” “Give me a vintage or grunge look,” and “Turn my drawing into a storybook.” Other prompts with colorful backgrounds encouraged broader uses — like “Brainstorm out loud with Live” or “Send me a daily news roundup.” If this redesign rolls out widely, it could signal Google’s push to make Gemini feel less like a static chatbot and more like an interactive, discovery-driven AI assistant that inspires users visually as well as conversationally.

The goal behind the redesign seems to be to guide users toward more creative and specific ways to use Gemini’s AI, rather than leaving them to explore its capabilities on their own. Beyond improving usability, the refresh would also make the Gemini app more visually engaging and interactive, giving it a modern, discovery-oriented vibe.

If this new interface rolls out publicly, it could also position Google to better compete with OpenAI, whose ChatGPT app remains fairly minimalist, greeting users with little more than a blank text field. By contrast, Gemini’s upcoming design could leverage growing interest in Google’s new AI image model, Nano Banana, which helped the app surge up the App Store charts in September — even reaching the No. 1 spot on September 12 before being overtaken by Sora.
